The Mathematician

The Story

Awww, this is so cute! I knew I would never forgive myself if I didn't write a song for Ian and Brooke's wedding. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to record it yet, beyond this rough cellphone recording that I took in my room before heading off to Nepal. I'd love to add some piano, cello, and backing vocals....

As most of my decent songs seem to be, this song was a lot of work! And by work, I mean I had to sit alone in silence for many, many hours to conjure the lyrics. The process of writing this actually also produced a number of other good ideas, which I hope to follow through on eventually.

In the end, though, it wasn't til the very night before the wedding that I had a sweeping stroke of inspiration and changed some important lines to really solidify the final piece. All in all, I'm happy with it.

Did U Know??

  • The song is equally natural from Brooke's or Ian's perspective!
  • The song will be as applicable 50 years from now as it was on their wedding day, and I plan to sing it at every major anniversary :).

Lyrics

I look, I feel the same as before
A few more wrinkles since we met
Years ago by the sweetwater shores
We shared a kiss I can't forget

Now I am here
I've waited all my life for this my dear
Before you now
I say my vows

For I am a mathematician
I count the stars in your eyes
And you are my heart's magician
Our love's an ocean deep and wide
Deep and wide

Sunrise, surprise, rub the sleep from your eyes
Another year has come and gone
Sunset, silhouette, now we're back to the start
To you, my love, I do belong

And we'll grow old
And you will always have my hand to hold
The leaves will fall
Our love will grow

Cause you're my heart and you're my home
You're my strength when I'm alone
You're the reason that I'm here
You're the music in my ears

I see the future in your face
A family born of love and grace
And I cannot but speak the truth
When I say I do

For I am a mathematician
I count the stars in your eyes
And you are my hearts magician
Our love's an ocean deep and wide
Deep and wide....
